Sewage treatment is the process of removing contaminants from wastewater and household sewage water.

A sewage treatment plant is an industrial facility for the treatment of urban wastewater, largely from toilets and bathrooms, to produce a non-polluting effluent that can be used as part of another process or directly discharged into the environment (for example, rivers). They may also be known as "wastewater treatment works" or "wastewater treatment facilities", treated water as well as sludge are recycled. The sewage treatment plant is divided into primary and secondary treatment stages. Treated effluent can then be discharged directly to surface water or further treated for reuse (biogas facilities for gas production or for irrigation as fertiliser, aquaculture facilities).


 It includes physical, biological and sometimes chemical processes to remove pollutants. Its aim is to produce an environmentally safe sewage water, called effluent, and a solid waste, called sludge or biosolids, suitable for disposal or reuse. Reuse is often for agricultural purposes, but more recently, sludge is being used as a fuel source.

 

Water from the mains, used by manufacturing, farming, houses (toilets, baths, showers, kitchens, sinks), hospitals, commercial and industrial sites, is reduced in quality as a result of the introduction of contaminating constituents. Organic wastes, suspended solids, bacteria, nitrates, and phosphates are pollutants that must be removed.

 

To make wastewater acceptable for reuse or for returning to the environment, the concentration of contaminants must be reduced to a safe level, usually a standard set by the Environment Agency.

 

Sewage can be treated close to where it is created (in septic tanks and their associated drainfields or sewage treatment plants), or collected and transported via a network of pipes and pump stations to a municipal treatment plant. The former system is gaining popularity for many new ECO towns, as 60% of the cost of mains sewerage is in the pipework to transport it to a central location and it is not sustainable. The major objective of hospital wastewater treatment plant is to treat the influent (untreated wastewater) generated by the hospitals and healthcare sectors before its direct release into natural environment. Sewage Treatment Plant Process Description:

  • The outfall sewer main from the last manholes will be let into a screen by gravity flow. Large solids particles shall be intercepted by a 5 mm – 8 mm spacing screen. The screen shall be manually cleaned with suitable rake arrangement.
  • The sewage after the screening is collected in a collection sump for smoothing out peak flows. This sump is suitably sized, to accommodate peak flow, as well as breakdown buffer. The provision of the air shall be kept in this tank to break the solids in suspension and to homogenize the sewage.
  • The homogenized effluent is then pumped into the Aeration Basin. The air shall be provided through an air diffusion system to ensure equal distribution of air in the reactor.
  • The overflow from the Aeration basin is passed through a Settler and collected in Clarified Tank by gravity. From where it is pumped to a pressure sand filter, which is capable of removing finely divided colloidal particles. An activated carbon filter will remove all traces of color and odor and disinfection is done with the help of UV so that the effluent can be used for gardening.
  • Filter backwash and sludge filtrate would be taken back into the collection sump.
  • Sludge generated in the Settler will be de-watered in a sludge holding tank. This sludge can be used as organic manure and sold as such.
  • Excess treated effluent can be discharged into the sewer or can be used as per requirement since it meets PCB requirements.
